The ALPIN [al.pɛ̃] was born in Savoy, western Alpes of France. There this pocketknife is also called "Le MONTAGNARD" or "Le SAVOYARD". Traditionally it is made with a front bolster and a wide Yatagan blade. It is a knife perfectly suited to the needs of life on the alpage with cows, cheese production and forestry work … or simply for cooking, dining and the casse-croûte.
The two-time Meilleur Ouvrier de France (best artisan of France) Robert Beillonnet re-designed the ALPIN for PassionFrance®. Its modern version is aimed at demanding enthusiasts who want a versatile and functional knife that is also a beautiful and rewarding object in urban ambience. Thus, Robert Beillonnet has chosen to dispense with the front bolster and made it “plein manche”, which makes it more delicate to manufacture while giving it an extra touch of elegance. In its design, faithful to the bon-vivant that he is, it has brought generosity to it by optimizing its proportions and accentuating the back of the knife, for the benefit of remarkable ergonomics. From a technical point of view, in order to protect the edge of the blade by preventing it from touching the spring, he installed a fixed stop on which the blade comes to rest without touching the spring.
In addition to the normal size with a handle length of 11cm, which we call the Grand ALPIN, we have now introduced its little brother (or is it a sister?) with a handle length of just under 10cm. It fits perfectly even in small pockets, always is at hand when you need it and still is an "adult", real ALPIN. We call it Petit-ALPIN.
We produce both with care and 100% by hand in our atelier in Thiers. In addition to the emblem of PassionFrance®, the Coq, it discreetly presents on its ricasso the initials RB, its famous creator.
The traditional ALPINS in our webshop have been manufactured for us in the ateliers of our colleagues ARTO, PARAPLUIE and Thiers-Issard in Thiers. They use the traditional "fourniture" with steel bolsters and their blades touch the springs. They are exactly as they were produced and sold on the markets and in the knife shops in France for generations.
