The LAGUIOLE-1900 [la.ɡjɔl] or [la.jɔl]. In the years around 1870/1880 the LAGUIOLE underwent decisive changes. The handle takes on a curved shape at the end and the Yatagan blade takes the place of the Bourbonnaise blade. Other elements remain the same, such as the lenticular mouche and the full handle without jaws. For such a LAGUIOLE, Pierre-Jean Calmels from Laguiole received his first awards and medals in Lyon, which was to be followed by many more for him and his colleagues from Laguiole. At the same time, it is the beginning of an immense upswing that should bring the Laguiole blacksmiths national attention and orders on a scale that they would not be able to cope with in their small, family-style village blacksmiths for a long time, because their customers were no longer the rural population alone who bought their knives locally from the blacksmiths or in the markets of the region, but everyone in France now wanted a LAGUIOLE.
Around 1900, another important step in the history of development happened, because the previously lenticular Mouche changed to a trapezoid and slowly took on the shape of an insect. In our LAGUIOLE-1900, all elements of a modern LAGUIOLE as we know it today are combined for the first time: curved handle, Yatagan blade and new mouche.
For this reason, PassionFrance has had a special series made in the coutellerie ARTO based on traditional fourniture, the forged, trapezoidal mouche with fine notches on the side, which for the first time give an idea of the insect that it will develop into in the following decades. As was customary at the time, the spring is decorated with only a few strokes of the file. As a sign of their authenticity, the LAGUIOLE-1900s have the logo of the ARTO forge, the seahorse, on the blade.
