Around 1880, a new LAGUIOLE with a yatagan blade and curved handle revolutionised knife making in Laguiole, where they produced the so-called LAGUIOLE-DROIT with a straight handle and bourbonnaise blade from 1850. Initially, its other details such as the oval mouche and its cran d'arrête were preserved. The cran d'arrête replaced the cran forcé, which no longer needed to raise the mouche to unlock the blade when closing the knife, and the oval mouche took on a trapezoidal shape, from which the figurative bee evolved over the following decades. Around 1900, the LAGUIOLE was finally born in the basic shape we know today. Pierre-Jean Calmels is generally seen as the father of this knife, who presented it at a number of exhibitions, where he was awarded gold medals and achieved fame.
The forge ARTO in Thiers manufactured a small edition of these LAGUIOLES-1900 for PassionFrance, which mark the turning point. They possess the new trapezoidal mouche, the cran forcé and the Yatagan blade, as well as the handle without mitres that all LAGUIOLES had when they were still made in Laguiole and not in Thiers. The decoration on the spring also consists of only a few file marks, just as the cutlers of the time used to do. It is a knife for all those who love purism and for whom LAGUIOLES today are often too over-decorated and who therefore want to concentrate on the essentials.
As a sign of its authenticity, the LAGUIOLE-1900 bears the seahorse, the old coat of arms of the ARTO forge, on the blade.
