The Donjon is a very distinctive pocket knife, with its large blade, deep pointed tip and bishop's crook handle. Typical of the Bourbonnais region, it was made by several small knifemakers in the village of Donjon, who sold them on the region's markets until 1900 to a rural clientele. This lively cutlery scene came to an end when the cutlers in Thiers began to produce that knife at home in the Thiers mountains, at lower prices than the Donjon cutlers could produce in their small workshops. A few years ago, when the tools used to produce the components of the knife were so used that no cutler in Thiers wanted to make a DONJON any more, production was stopped and the knife was in danger of being forgotten, like other types of regional knife before.
PassionFrance wanted to avoid this and, in collaboration with the forge that traditionally made the knife's parts, developed new tools for a new furniture, which on this occasion was to benefit from constructive and functional improvements, such as blades that no longer touch the spring, a quality that the DONJON did not have before.
And so it reappears in our workshop in Thiers, perpetuating a tradition of Bourbonnais pocket knives that has almost come to an end. We make it with walnut handles, whose ends are shaped with a few strokes of the file so that they take the form of a bishop's crook.
